What is now Trump International Golf Club began as a 300 acre parcel of flat, scrub land that bordered the busy Palm Beach International Airport.
The Trump Organization envisioned a transformation into what is now a world-class course comprised of hills, palm trees, flowers, waterfalls, oak trees, streams, creeks, and coconut trails. He provided an unlimited budget, topping $40 million, in his desire to create the best golf course that could be built: something very, very special!
We moved over three million cubic yards of earth in a period of nine months, part of which was used to create the highest golf elevation in the state of Florida, 58 feet above sea level. The result is a landscape unique to South Florida and the creation of a southern live oak forest, highlighted with tropical plants and palms characteristic of the region. Over 1000 live oak trees ranging from 20 to 50 feet were adapted to the landscape and eight hundred coconut palms now grace the grounds. The perimeter of the course is ringed with 700 mature Royal Palm Trees that define the boundaries and establish a formal, estate quality.
A great golf course also must have more than aesthetic appeal. The course, which opened in the fall of 1999, was built for tournament caliber play, measuring 7,400 yards from the back tees. Each hole has six sets of tees, so each accommodates a variety of skill levels and gives the option of playing over water.
Because the land was originally flat, we were able to think of different concepts with no two holes alike. The layout, routing, and bunker shapes are all unique. If I never design another course, I am satisfied that this project was the highlight of my career.
An unforgettable golfing experience awaits you at Trump International Golf Club!
